Generic Scooters
Generic is a scooter and motorcycle company started in Krems, Austria in 2004. The country was chosen as the perfect corporate headquarters because of Austria’s long history as a leader in automotive engineering. Wanting to find new solutions to urban commuter transport, the Generic brand was able to find footing in the European market within the first year of the company’s operation.
Generic offers stylish motorcycles and scooters with unique accessories and features at a remarkably low cost for such a new company. One of the keys to its high quality and relatively low price point is that Generic controls its own production facility in Southeast Asia. Not having to pay for parts built by other manufacturers helps keep Generic’s production overhead lower than many of its competitors in the independent vehicle market.
In 2008, Generic completed work on their first original bike engine. Of principal concern for the Austrian design team was to keep fuel consumption low while still saying below European emissions standards. The engine went on to be implemented in Generic’s 125cc, 150cc and 250cc bikes.
Generic maintains low runs on its bike models to ensure the company stays on par with customer demand for their products. Because of the “in-house” nature of their production, Generic is able to turn around larger orders of their bikes in a very short amount of time, even though their facilities are split between two continents. As of 2010, generic exports bikes to 30 countries in Europe, with plans to expand internationally in the near future.
A good portion of the Generic product line is designed by Kiska, one of the leading motorbike design firms in Austria. The engineering knowhow behind Generic’s own production team is more than equaled by the style and forward thinking that Kiska brings to the table. Together, the two companies are able to maintain a level of quality control and attention to detail in their vehicles that they refer to as “distinctly European.”
Generic’s hip and youthful approach to marketing their products extends to social media. The company website invites the public to interact with Generic staffers at their Facebook page, which includes quizzes and updates about new bike models. Generic customers have access to a 24-7 delivery service that personally takes replacement parts to any address in Europe.
Today, Generic offers a small but impressive line of commuter scooters, lightweight motorcycles and dirtbikes. An electric scooter prototype, the e-MO, was also unveiled at the 2009 EUROBIKE convention.
