Prior to manufacturing motor scooters, Piaggio was a leader in Italian transportation, and produced rail carriages, luxury coaches, and train cars. The plan was destroyed in World War II by the Allied forces due to its military important to the Axis. But the plant did not allow the bombing to be the end of its story, and after the War it rebuilt and began designing and manufacturing motor scooters. In fact, an engineer there designed what has become the modern view of the motor scooter, and that is why scooters have become synonymous with Vespa and vice versa. The engineer was Corradino D’Ascanio, and he hated motorcycles, but the transportation needs of western Europe in general and Italy in particular made motorcycles more practical and cheaper. Ten years after the first Vespa was designed, there were over one million Vespa motor scooters produced. After that, Vespa motor scooters just grew in popularity, and while there are now many different models and styles, not to mention copy cats from different companies, the basic design and purpose of Vespa motor scooters has never changed.

Vespa is a well known name in field of scooter manufacturing. In fact, Vespa was the first scooter to be recognized globally and it set a high benchmark in the field of two wheelers. Vespa is an Italy based scooter company under the banner of Piaggio. On 23rd April 1946, Piaggio & Co. SPA of Pontedera, Italy developed Vespa from a single model scooter to a full series of scooters. It is now owned by Piaggio, which happens to be the Europe’s largest two wheeler manufactures and fourth largest in the world as per the number of units sold. Vespa scooters are well known for their steel body along the bonnet for the engine. They revolutionized the scooters by bringing the flat floorboard for foot rest and protection. In late 1950’s and early 1960’s Vespa was amongst those very few scooters which competed successfully in races against motorcycles. Very often the Vespa scooter came out to be victorious as well. Albeit Vespa has spread its market in many countries of Europe, Asia, America and even Australia but still Vespa’s main market is Italy.

Vespa’s first historical model was Paperino which was made in 1945, from which it evolved further. Since then, many models ranging from 50cc to300cc have swept the world market of scooters. Till now, Vespa’s has produced 138 different variants in all but currently there are only four major models that are in productions. The first is, LX which comes in two variants LX 50 2T and LX 125 ie. The former is a 50cc, 2 stroke scooter while the later comes with a 4 valve, 4 stroke, 125 cc engine. The second is GTS, which also has two models. One is GTS 250 ie, a high tech strong scooter with a powerful engine of 250cc and other is GTS 125 which comes with electric start and has a 125cc engine.

The GTS 300 i.e. model of GTS Super series of Vespa is incredibly powerful and is fitted with a 300cc engine and has a fuel capacity of 9L. Whereas, GTS Super 125 ie is a 125cc scooter with more enhanced features than any other scooter in this category. The lightest model of current generation of Vespa scooters is the S series which features two variants; those are “S 50cc” and “S 125cc” in 50cc and 125cc segments respectively.

The company was evolved into a full fledged scooter line by the Piaggio the year 1946. The Piaggio group is the fourth largest manufacturer of scooters in the world in terms of volumes. The most attractive feature of Vespa scooter is the floorboard that gave extra protection and acted as a foot rest too.

The main market for the company happens to be Europe but the company has marked presence in Asia and America too. It is one of those rare scooters that competed with motor cycles. The S series of scooters manufactured by the company happen to be one of the lightest models available at present. The most recent scooters to be rolled out by the company are the ET and GT range which are packed with 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines. Given the changing demands of modern times, the company is also working on developing an electric scooter of its own. The company has invested extensively in the R & D wing of its company.

After that, hoards of models in the range of 50cc to 300cc have been manufactured by the company. The company has 4 primary models even though it has manufactured over 100 models till date. A renowned series of the company is the GTS Super series of Vespa which happens to be extremely powerful and is backed by 300 cc engines.
